Decisions, Decisions

I had a choice of going to tomorrow night's Cubs vs. Dodgers game or the one played tonight. I decided to go tomorrow, because I like watching our Tuesday night shows, including "Will Trent" and "The Rookie", both of which were a lot of fun.

Then I turned off the delayed replay of those shows and landed back on the Marquee Channel to discover that the Cubs had mounted a comeback win, 11-10 in 10 innings.

Maybe I should have gone to the baseball game tonight.

But the shows *were* good...

Uplift

My knees have been bothering me lately. This is not a surprise, as it is something that happens when my current pair of shoes is wearing out. The problem is that the shoe that I want to purchase has been stubbornly out of stock *and* I have been annoyingly busy. Busy enough, in fact, that I had not gone to the closet, pulled out the brand-new pair of shoes of a different style, and done the setup to get them ready to wear.

Thus does pain make you stupid.

Saturday night, I finally took the five minutes to get the shoes down and set them up. I have worn them Sunday and today and my knees are *much* happier.

Today, I ordered a new pair of shoes of yet another style that are, at least, in stock. We'll see how they do.

Paperworking

We had a lovely and relatively relaxed Easter today.

I helped Gretchen get the rib roast in the oven and then ran upstairs where I sorted through several items of paperwork that have been lingering for too long. In, around, and after this, I watched the Cardinals lose to the Mets and the Cubs lose to the Diamondbacks. I also noted that the Reds beat the Orioles by a final score of 24-2. It was sad that the Orioles only managed a safety.

Anyway, it will be back to work tomorrow.

If Easter is your holiday, I hope that you had a good one!

Git 'Er Done

I have *way* too many things that I am behind on here at home (I have things that I am behind on at work too, but I can mostly ignore those for the weekend) and I would like to finish some of them. Most of these things are sadly resistant to being finished.

I am nearly done with today's five loads of laundry (with a bit of help from K). This is good.

When I got home from lunch, Gretchen was out with Julie which meant that I had access to the entire garage. This meant that I could get out the big ladder, take it to the back corner of the garage, and put the access hatch to the attic that had blown out on a windy day back in place, which seemed a good idea given the presence of a raccoon in the attic.

Unfortunately, the path to that corner of the garage is rather akin to a minefield, the area underneath the access hatch was full of stuff, and the chances of succeeding in doing this were very low. So I didn't try.

There are, however, a great many things that need to be done before I can park my car in the garage again, which is something I would really like to do. Unfortunately, one of the items was something that Gretchen had informed me was all *my* problem.

See, a couple of years ago when we thought we were going to do the repairs on the fence ourselves (with help from Sam), I bought the necessary lumber and piled it along the disaster area side of the garage. Then we ended up hiring someone to do the fence repairs, which means all of the lumber was still in the garage and needs to be moved before it is possible to think about parking on that side of the garage. This is *my* problem.

I figured out how many of the pickets I could stash in the picket storage on Gretchen's side of the garage and shoved them in there. Then there was the problem of the 2x4s. There were a lot of those too. And there was a gap between two shelf units on Gretchen's side of the garage that was just about the size of a 2x4. I moved some empty boxes around to clear the space above the gap (because the 2x4s are long) and slid all of the 2x4s into the gap. I will want to stick something in front of the timbers so that an earthquake or something doesn't decide to drop them onto a parked car, but all of our good bungee cords departed when the fence was repaired...

I then realized that the remaining pickets could be stored behind the hanging bracket for snow shovels and rakes. I had to remove one snow shovel and the snowblower to make this work, but it worked and I was able to shove everything back into position.

This leaves the two 4x4 posts that need to be stored somewhere. In fact, I know where they need to be stored, but it is at the back corner of the garage on the opposite side of the minefield, so that will have to wait. But the garage is a little bit closer to clean (very little, Ensign) which I am going to take as progress.

In other news, the raccoon has not yet taken the bait in the trap -- or perhaps the raccoon is smarter than the guy who set the trap and has acquired the bait without being trapped.

I have a ton of things that I need to do on the computer tomorrow. We'll see how that goes.

Varmints

It looks like a raccoon has broken into our attic. We have called the appropriate pest control specialists who are setting a trap so the raccoon can be taken far away. I am hoping that there is only one, he can be removed, and the necessary repairs made.

*sigh*

Generally Crazy

It was the sort of day where I took Gretchen out to Chili's for lunch and then ate the appetizer platter special *as* my lunch.

I have to say that I have missed fried mozzarella...

End of School Year Everything

It is now time to write a whole bunch of checks to the Maine West Bookstore to cover everything that needs to be paid for by the end of the year. :)

The end of the year is getting here faster than I might have anticipated...

Light Maintenance

Today was a day for light maintenance around here. I picked up the Walmart order, my prescription at Walgreens, a number of items at Mariano's (of which I forgot two and will have to try again), and took care of a few things on the computer that needed to be sorted out.

I also got together with Gretchen and we have substantially improved the state of the kitchen, which is a prelude to figuring out just where in the heck the ants are coming from.

Oh, and I changed a light bulb in the kitchen, which I suppose qualifies as light maintenance.

Tomorrow, it is back to work and a complicated day of shuffling kids around. :)

The Mail Must Go Through

Sam was good enough to come over today and help me remove the old mailbox post, which was sunk in quick-setting cement when we originally installed the beastie. This was made much easier, because Sam brought along a jack of ginormous size. When the chain was attached to a bolt that he threaded through one of the holes in the steel post (normally hidden; now a twisted ruin inside the outer aluminum post), the whole assembly lifted easily out of the ground. This made it possible to throw that mess in the trash and finish digging out the new hole.

The big problem was that the hole in the ground was much larger than the amount of cement that we wanted to put into it. At this point, Sam suggested running to Home Depot and picking up some Sonotube to use to confine the cement. This seemed not entirely unreasonable, even it it turned the project into a two-tripper. I noted that I had a big sheet of corrugated cardboard in the garage that might be cut for this purpose.

And then I realized that I had the box that the new mailbox had come in. Half of that, sunk into the ground and surrounded by dirt, was just about the right size for the cement pour. Adjustments were made, the box placed in the ground, and the cement poured in. K was good enough to come out and help, attaching the hose to the well-covered spigot in the front of the house so that we could easily add water to the mix.

After that, we went in to rest for an hour while the cement set around the post (enough). K was delegated to comb through the removed dirt to remove the larger rocks and chunks of concrete and throw them in the trash. We then filled in the hole with dirt, attached the mailbox with minimum difficulty, and declared victory.

The new mailbox is slightly shorter than the old one, but appears to be within regulations. And just *slightly* further away from the curb, although I think there is no possible (legal) placement of the box that will prevent some damned fool from backing into it. (The previous mailbox was -- with high likelihood -- destroyed by one of the city snowplows backing up into it.) The new box is black, so it will contrast well with snow and sky, assuming that drivers bother to look.

I am considering the virtues of an international orange mailbox. I am not sure if anyone makes one.

And when I checked the new box late this afternoon, it contained mail.

Let's Make an Escape

I have now posited that there is an "escape room" theory of computer user-interface design. The object here is to hide the controls that are required to perform a particular function so that you must carefully search the entirety of the user-interface to find the correct menu selection or button to press to get your work done.

I am not sure why this is a good idea.

Replacement Time

The mailbox has been bodged back into position temporarily, but can't stay that way for long, so replacement is in order. Fortunately, it is supposed to be warm(er) and dry this weekend, which improves the chances of success.

I'll see how this goes.

I Can See Clearly Now

It took a few tries, but the last set of contact lenses we pulled seem to be doing the job. I'm reading the computer screen without eyestrain and my distance vision is still good. When I was at Wrigley Field on Friday, I was able to focus on and resolve the individual squares in the netting behind the plate from my seat in Terrace Reserved.

My eyes are still a bit less flexible than they used to be, so it takes a few minutes to shift from "best close vision" to "best distance vision" as I shift focal lengths. It's not as noticeable in bright sunlight, because my iris stops down and improves my depth of field. At night, it takes a little longer to stretch out -- not that my vision is bad; it's just not as *good* as it can be.

All things considered, we'll call this a success.

Round and Round

Windows 11 stubbornly wants to store all of my default folders (Documents, Downloads, etc.) in the OneDrive folder. I want them under my users directory.

I am gradually winning this battle, but I want to strangle someone at Microsoft.

Pitching? What Pitching?

The Cardinals got swept (badly) by the Red Sox this weekend, mostly due to a meltdown of two of the three starting pitchers coupled with a late meltdown by their closer. Closers will periodically melt down and if they bounce back, it's fine. I think it was probably too many days since Helsley had pitched, which is the sort of thing that leads to overthrowing and control problems.

The meltdowns by the starters are a bigger problem. I note that other starters are available if this nonsense continues...

Opening Day

It was Opening Day for the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Given that K is deep in rehearsals for the last show of her high school tenure (and the state of our passports, which remain stubbornly expired) going to FKO really wasn't an option, but going down to Wrigley was.

Gretchen dropped me at the Swift terminus, which meant that I didn't have to worry about finding parking. My Ventra card, however, refused to work at all. The nice fellow at the station passed me through on that end, but warned me that I should buy a return ticket at Addison (because the machines at Skokie weren't working correctly, it seems) when I got there so that I would not be waiting behind the drunks after the game. I thanked him and headed on my way.

It was annoyingly cold today, although I'm told it was less cold than last year. My upgraded seats seem to be an actual upgrade and the Cubs won, mostly through the kindness of the opposing pitcher who kept issuing walks, including one with the bases loaded. So the Cubs won 3-1 over the Padres.

And I am warm again now, after some excellent chili for dinner and a lot of time in a house with central heating. :)

Improv Tonight

Tonight was the second performance of the Improv Warriors over at the high school. K is one of the two group leaders for this year. The troupe was a lot of fun to watch and it's great to see them having fun with this.

I *did* have to resist the urge to yell "Freeze!" though...
