Poor Abandoned Ruby

Gretchen was dealing with various kid problems this morning, so I ended up running down to let Ruby out of her kennel while she was still out. I offered to let Ruby out (she declined) and gave her breakfast. Then I went back up to get to work.

Gretchen came home not too much later, but then had to go out again to take care of some things. Since I was still home, she didn't bother to put Ruby in her kennel. And as Gretchen's car was pulling away from the house, I heard piteous howling coming from downstairs. Ruby had been left alone, alone I tell you, in the big empty house instead of having been locked safely in her kennel and given a treat.

After listening to this for about 30 seconds, I shouted "Ruby!"

The howling immediately stopped. Ruby didn't bother to come upstairs to look for me. She just wanted to know that someone was here. When I looked over the balcony later, she was peacefully resting on the couch in the living room.

Later in the day, Gretchen had to go out again and once again left Ruby out, because I was at home. Piteous howling ensued. I did not wait 30 seconds this time -- I just shouted "Ruby!" And it became much quieter.

Poor abandoned dog. :)
