Here's a link describing some of the things that AFSP does. Basically, they're trying to set up programs to help identify folks who might commit suicide and get them some help, as well as provide support to the folks that get left behind. It looks like one of their major thrusts is on college campuses, which seems to make sense. I understand that they're also working on improving the crisis line setup in the Chicago area (which I'm told is badly understaffed and underfunded).
